Formula One: Praise rings loudly for Singapore GP
SINGAPORE, Sept 29, 2008 (AFP) - Singapore revelled Monday in ringing praise from key figures in Formula One after successfully hosting the sport's first ever night race, with the bar now set for new Grand Prix.
Commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone went as far as calling it the new jewel in the sport's crown, while team owners said it would be a hard act to follow.
The island is famed for its efficiency and everything went to plan, even the city-state's notorious tropical downpours stayed away while Singaporeans embraced the glamorous and mega-rich spectacle.
Given they had only a year to prepare for a new street circuit under lights, Ecclestone said it was a remarkable achievement, setting the scene for more races to follow suit.
"We've never seen anything built so good, so quickly," he said after Renault's Fernando Alonso won the first-ever incident-packed race under lights.
"I'd be surprised if it hadn't been really top quality standards. Singapore should be very, very proud of what's happened.
"They were courageous enough to want to do it. There was a lot of criticism but I hope they're well rewarded for what they've done."
As well as installing 1,500 light projectors, Singapore built from scratch an impressive pit building housing the team garages, media centre and a Paddock Club, as well as a new road.
Red Bull racing team principal Christian Horner said it was a phenomenal weekend, and would be tough to match anywhere in the world.
"The guys here have done an absolutely unbelievable job. The effort that has gone into this circuit in the last 12 months is nothing short of phenomenal," he said.
"I think the spectacle of a night race, but not only have we got a night race, we have also got a great circuit, a really challenging circuit.
"They have just raised the bar considerably for a new circuit and the spectacle of racing at night in a big city such as Singapore is really exciting."
On top of everything running smoothly, part of the success was the race being run against the backdrop of the city at night, with its glittering skyscrapers and top landmarks shown off to a global audience.
Tourism is a key money spinner for Singapore along with manufacturing, and the government, which is working to market the city as the "Monaco of the East", is banking on the spectacle bringing more dollars to its shores.
It anchored the long weekend with dozens of lifestyle events, including the Singapore River Festival and the Singapore Motor Show as well as countless parties, which local newspapers said were a roaring success.
Mercedes Motorsport chief Norbert Haug said Ecclestone must take some credit for not only agreeing to hand Singapore a Grand Prix but insisting that it be run at night to take the sport in a new direction.
"I think it is a big, big step forward for Formula One," he said.
"The pictures, the atmosphere is really one of a kind and this gives a completely new experience to all the viewers worldwide but also to the spectators.
"That is very positive and the whole scenery I think is unreal. It is like in a movie and I think it is a big, big step. I think Bernie pushed very hard, so thanks to him."
The drivers were equally effusive, with their only real gripes about the track being too bumpy and the lighting in some corners. Little could be done about the bumps but tweaks were made to the lights to make it better.
"The track is quite impressive," said McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.
"The most impressive thing for me is what an amazing job they have done here in Singapore to prepare the circuit. I cannot particularly fault it.
"I think they did a tremendous job, so I feel everyone deserves a real pat on the back because it is really impressive."

just when i thought im going to recover from my wisdom tooth, i got hit by another flu again.
this is the third time i have fallen ill in a month. third time. how do u expect me to be in a cherry and understanding mood when most of the time i feel like fainting. maybe i am unreasonable. but sometimes, try to be in my shoes.
every Sept will be a very busy month. especially the end of Sept. cuz pei and joyce birthday falls on the same day.
Pei's Celebration
We brought forward pei's birthday celebration to thurs. Went to Sketchers at Bugis for dinner after work. bcuz we make xian throw face by making her walk around Orchard with a bouquet of flowers on her birthday, she revenge by buying pei a Barney balloon and a PINK flower. pei hates pink fyi.
its really nice to be able to meet up once in awhile (4 times in a year to be exact bcuz we only meet up on birthdays lolx). pei never fail to entertain us with her stories, xian is surprisingly more shu nu now (hoho!) and pinggie as usual the sotong. wahaha. Happy birthday Pei! =)
Joyce Birthday
We started the day with K Lunch at Suntec. Its been so long since we last went to K box but unfortunately i was down with flu and my voice totally CMI. haixx.. what a waste. my voice can only hit the male key for duets. so sad lahz.
we shop around the area after that and waited for the rest to come over for dinner at Kuishinbo. from the photos, i think i looked half dead. lolx.. we got birthday girl a Nikon Pink Camera! Joyce loves pink fyi. hahaha. HAppy 21st Joyce!
so we wrapped the present up without the camera and hid the camera in someone's bag. after many discussion we decided to hide it in Julius's bag. we gave joyce 3 questions to solve and guess who the person is, otherwise will be green tea forfeit.
the 3 questions are:
1. The favourite animal that you like most - Zhu (Ju)
2. The most important person of Singapore - Lee Kwan Yew (li)
3. 我们 - (us)
and i thought it was kinda hard. but she guess everything right! awwww~ joyce is getting smarter now. lolx..
after dinner we went to the bridge that links Marina Square and Suntec Conventional Centre to peep at the F1 Qualifying Round. it was so so squeezy at the bridge that no one could hardly move. and there is this lady in front of me talking loudly to her husband asking him what if there is a fire now at the bridge. CHOY!! feel like smacking her. wuya mouth. if really got fire hope she is the first one to become roasted pig.
anyway after waiting for a short 15mins the race started sharp at 10pm. everyone is so excited. even feverish me oso start to bounce up and down to try to find a good spot to catch a glimpse.
then we hear the engine!!
then it gets louder!!
then it got so loud its like bursting ur ear drums!!
then its gone.

i think it took last than half a second to speed thru? at first i wonder if my eyes were playing tricks on me or did a car really did zoom pass. it was so damn fast! other than ferrari where u can manage to see a red shadow dash pass, i can hardly see the other cars. imagine we cant even catch it with human eye, what makes u think u can capture it on a normal digital camera? so ah ru took picture of the crowd instead LOL! good job.

i fall sick again.
very sianx. i believe its because hospital got too much virus flying around.
and partly because of my wisdom tooth. i haven been chewing my food since last friday when the tooth suddenly got swollen and painful. then it resulted in indigestion. it wasnt that bad on sat since i still got piggy take care of me. ytd it got so bad i nearly throw up in the bus. then i felt giddy. then headache. then MC.
thats the summary. bascially i have been eating porridge for the last few days. damn the tooth. dun tell me to go dentist. NO WAY!!
and even though im on MC i am even more stressed than when im in the office. old woman is on leave today. and i was suppose to order food for tmr's lunch meeting. i still have to process orders and call from home. and stupid old woman suggest stupid subway delivery for healthy lunch and damn subway their delivery and catering system completely sucks. ARGH!!!!!! whats the point of having a delivery hotline when orders can only be made online???? and whats the point of having a delivery when pickups are encouraged????
if i dun get the lunch tmr, i will go kill myself before old woman kills me and haunt subway forever.
anyway, despite nearly throwing up the cheesy chicken chop that i had for lunch (i had a hard time chewing), still manage to meet up with some old old old frens ytd for dinner at Ajisen. Sorry that i wasnt that chatty since most of the time the table seemed to be floating and the walls seemed to be spinning. haha. but its great to meet up with u guys again, after like 2 years. =) of cuz that does not apply to simin. hoho.

life cant get better than having a crab eating session with the girls on friday and bringing piggy to the bbq session with my colleagues at my boss's (aka 村长) house on saturday.
Life's good with chilli crabs!!!!!!!!!! pure shiok-ness. hehehe..
we saw this comical scene while we are at the ATM machine.
i guess this is a 名副其实的招财猫. it keep peering at people's password. naughty cat. LOL! meow~
Life is actually good to wake up early on Saturday morning. everywhere is buzzing with activities. unfortunately it was raining and we din get to run. after a heavy breakfast (oops!) and rain subsided, we decided to walk to the reservior finally. then ru's shoes broke. LOL! super funny.. the whole sole came off.. but she breakeven already. the shoe is already 10yrs old! went TP Cheers and get a slipper. then simin sole also coming off. LOL! this simply shows how long we last exercised. so we went walk walk instead of run. and we even walk past the 3km mark lo!! just that we start at i think the 2.5km mark. =.= hehehehe.
Life is also good to have super yummy and non-chaotah tasting BBQ food!! i have decided to hire the Joey and Lao Niang to my birthday chalet to be in charge of marinating and BBQ-ing the food. hehehe. piggy keep asking how come our BBQ food never taste half as nice as theirs. LOL! now that piggy saw how 'scarily' my colleagues can eat, he cannot blame me for getting fat liao. blea!!
my office is female dominated (99.9%) so poor piggy shud be quite bored there. lucky got Joey's husband (aka liverpool fan) around. he is such a nice, funny and chatty guy. Mr Liverpool fan even drive both of us to a coffeeshop together to watch the big match.
Life's good isnt it?
all except the fact that Man Utd lost the match yesterday night. but really cant deny the fact that they play like shit yesterday.. so kind of them to help Livepool score one goal too.. haixx..
so u can image how black piggy's face got after the match. my jersey got no luck. BOO!!

yay! strawberry peach cheesecake is a success! just that piggy say he cant really taste the peach. muz cut it bigger next time =) i think this flavour taste nicer than the blueberry! piggy really eat alot lahz.. nearly half the cake.. thanks for being so supportive.. hehe.. i find it quite nice.. my brother had a second helping oso.. woohoo!! *fly into the air*
today is piggy's niece full month celebration. my god, the baby is soooo cute! and very guai.. never cry at all cuz she keep dozing off.. so adorable and got big eyes! and does anyone knows why babies love to sleep in the position with both hands raise like surrendering liddat? hahaha.. oh she got a 'jia' in her name too hehe..
then we went get my running shoes. I AM GOING TO RUN OK! my parents actually stand at piggy's side and say i wun go run one. HUMPH!!!!!!!!
went into zara with $100 and came out with 20cents, one white sweater and one unidentified coloured pants. hoho.. if only i got my full pay.. i definitely wun walk out with that only.. and i comb the whole Orchard but couldnt find a dress that i like.. either that or too expensive.. where can i find dresses~ i wan buy dress! *sit down on the floor and throw tantrum*
anyway the whole of Orchard is promoting on the GP F1 Racing.. everywhere is the racing car. so that explains the photos below =)
and that piggy got me totally freaked out when his lens went missing from his left eye.. he still very calm.. i was already panicking cuz totally cannot see the lens liao.. he still can calmly alight from the train, walk down to the toilet and luckily manage to get the lens back to place. it went into the eye lahz.. wah lauu, i was worrying like hell and already thinking how to go SNEC. he still can tell me to relax and be cool as a cucumber.. LOL~

in case u are wondering why i suddenly sound so profound in my last post, its to do with my reading up with tonnes of medical book lately.
publishing a book and being an editor is not as simple as it seems. especially mine is a niche area - medical. but its good lahz in a way.. i get to read up on alot of medical stuff and improve my general knowledge..
we just release one medical book 'Behind the Stethoscope'. was reading the book and inspired by what one of the doctor said so jot it down in my post. of cuz she din wrote it in chinese. i scared later kana sue for plagiarism so i translate into chinese hee..
im on project 'gain weight (abit) + stay healthy'. hehe.. gonna go buy my running shoes tmr and go run every saturday morning. my office is damn fierce lahz.. they can really eat and eat and eat non stop. i feeling the pressure now.. pressure on my weight!! lolx..
so yah lo, i think think.. if getting fat then find a solution and overcome it lo.. exercising is the best.. cannot say fat then aiyah never mind.. fat is good for me, keep pyscho-ing myself, positive.. but hey, i know i cannot even convince myself im ok with me being FAT, how i go convince others?
actually every other thing is also the same. its the matter of whether u can convince yourself to think the same way as you want to feel. u know, the brain and the heart dun coordinate together. what u think may not be what u feel. but they co-exist. instead of forcing yourself to think this way, probably u could listen to what ur heart really have to say. Perhaps staying positive have its limits.
afterall, you live life for yourself, not anyone else. why let others influence you? it could be a positive influence, but it could be your own opinion only. well, its your life. no one have the authority to make any decision for you. if you are making decisions for other people's life, hello, please stop. you shud only give opinions or suggestions NOT decisions. no one shud have the authority to question u on a decision too, as if any consequences, you will be the one bearing it, not someone or anyone else.

one more thing to share.
this man was very sick. some illness to do with the gastro and colorectal side. its very serious and the doctors could not do anything to help. life was slipping away from him. they could only try to lessen his pain. he knew it. but he only got one wish. that is to see his heavily pregnant wife deliver and to carry his son in his arms. he got very strong willpower and though he was really in a very critical condition when he discharged, he managed to hang on for a couple of weeks and finally fulfill his wish and held his new born son in his arms. sadly, he passed away the next day. anyway, its a true story.
the morale of the story?
people like to fight over trivial things like who shud make breakfast or who shud carry the shopping bags or other stupid things and get so upset. hey, no one realise that at the same time, there is someone who is desperately trying to breathe and stay alive just to fulfill a simple wish. what is your problem, compared to his? dun you feel ashame comparing your distress to his?
people. never take things for granted. treasure what you have cuz u never know when u will lose them. same old story, but there is a reason why everyone is saying the same thing, isnt it =)
damn, all these readings are eating into me liao.. hoho.. sart sart leh.. hehehehe.. i really appreciate simin and ru to take the effort to download skype so that they can keep me accompany at work. thank you girls =) really cant do without u guys =) simin dun puke at my sentence lahz!! lolx..
